Below is a wonderful photo of Paul Jarrett, Sensei, at the shrine of the Founder of Shotokan, Funakoshi Gichin (also known as Gichin Funakoshi). This shrine is in Okinawa, the literal “birthplace” of karate.
Funakoshi was responsible for bringing the Okinawan art of “te” (hand, as it was called back then) to Japan, where he renamed it KARA-TE (open hand), thus, KARATE.
